The How Long Jug Band performs old, obscure songs with lyrics and arrangements that are just too good to be forgotten. Their repertoire focuses on the golden age of jug band music around 1930, when street performers started recording blues and jazz on string band instruments. They also explore deeper roots, like a mandolin rag from 1906, and newer branches, like Jim Kweskin and Dan Hicks.

A typical show with this quartet of multi-instrumentalists features guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, harmonica, kazoo, washboard, washtub bass and the eponymous jug, plus rich vocal harmonies, and a few surprises like turkey baster and invisible saw.

In its 16 years, the band has performed at the National Jug Band Jubilee in Louisville, Kentucky, has hosted Jugapalooza jug band showcases and National Kazoo Day events in Portland, and has released four albums. Band leader Arlo Leach hosts a monthly jug band jam and publishes lead sheets and lessons online to further share this fun music.
